What is ABE?
The ABE (German: “Allgemeine Betriebserlaubnis” = Vehicle Type Approval) is part of the registration process for cars on public roads in Germany. It approves that a car or car part adheres to the respective national regulations. The ABE is issued by Germany’s Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA). It is applicable only nationally, hence only in Germany. For regulations in other European countries, klick here.

With an ECE approval the TÜV inspection or the registration in the vehicle documents are not required since the specifications of the aftermarket parts exactly correspond to the original manufacturer parts. The advantage over the ABE is that you are not required to carry the documents with you.
Individual type approval?
This approval is carried out by local passenger car registration authorities for individual cars and is valid ONLY for those!
