Of loads and their carriers

Every car has four of them, but only the fewest car owners have ever looked at them in more detail – rims. The technically correct term is wheels, and they are part of the unsprung masses of every car. Together with the rim, the wheel rim substantially contributes to the stability of the wheel, at the same time protecting and holding the air-filled tyre. Design and technology result in the perfect wheel for your car. But who carries the car? The tyre? The rim? And how many kilograms does such a rim manage to hold?

Rim bearing load
The rim bearing load describes the maximum load a rim can take in kilograms. To calculate the exact bearing load, the figure stated in the car documents must be divided in half because the bearing load is always given as the maximum axle load in the respective member states (EU) for every front and rear axle. Here’s an example for a better understanding:If the technically permissible axle load amounts to 1,700 kilograms for axle 1 (front axle) this results in a bearing load on the front axle of 850 kilograms per wheel. In other words, a rim on the front axle must be able to bear a load of up to 850 kilograms.

At DEZENT, this information is always recorded in the TÜV certificates of the respective rim designs and can be easily downloaded here. Now, you may ask yourself whether that’s important and whether you need to know. That depends on whether you leave the fitting of your new rims to a specialist workshop or do it yourself. If you opt for a workshop, you can sit back and relax because you’re paying for the service. But if you want to buy your rims yourself, the bearing load is one of the most important criteria to be safe on the road.

The biggies
The biggies in the SUV segment require correspondingly loadable rims. For a rim in the 22-inch dimension for cars, such as Porsche Cayenne, BMW X5 and X6, Range Rover and Range Rover Sport, the bearing load of each rim is up to 1,000 kilograms. Multiplied by the number four this comes to 4 tons! Taking into account a kerb weight of roughly 2,500 kilograms, a maximum capacity weight of another 1,000 kilograms as well as the forces acting on the rim, e.g. during an off-road ride, the partially very high acting bearing loads are relativised.

Electric and hybrid cars
Hybrid cars want to combine the advantages of combustible engines and electric drives. Since an electric engine already demonstrates high efficiency at low engine speeds, it is particularly suited for starting a car and for lower speeds. At high rotational speeds, however, the combustible engine works (even) better. As regards the weight of a vehicle, the parameters change accordingly as compared to conventional fossil drives as the additional propulsion in hybrid cars results in additional weight. DEZENT has always met these new requirements, having also increased the bearing loads in many rim designs.
The car tyres of electric cars and hybrids carry a heavy load, owing to the battery. The instant torque takes a big toll on tyres. The higher weight results in higher sluggishness which automatically leads to a longer brake path. That’s why, it’s important that you select the right car tyre to achieve the best possible mileage. When buying new tyres for electric or hybrid cars you should pay special attention to the load index

Car tyre load index
For electric cars it’s especially important that the tyres bear the weight of the car. That’s why, owing to the higher weight of electric cars, you need extra strong tyres with reinforced sidewalls.
The DEZENT tip: XL tyres have been developed especially for the use with heavy loads.

Why special tyres for electric cars pay off
Every car owner wants to consume less fuel, for reasons of saving money or reducing the environmental impact. The decisive factor in electronic cars is the rolling resistance of the tyres which increases both energy efficiency and active fuel consumption. Therefore, according to TÜV, the wrong car tyres can decrease the range of an e-car’s battery charge by up to 15%.

Tyres and rims carry the car
The tyres of your car are the only contact to the road, guaranteeing your safety. As a high-tech product, tyres adjust to the respective requirements in summer and winter through their tread, construction and chemical composition. Rims must both match the tyres and the wheel fitment at the axle a 100 percent. Only that way, the perfect combination of tyres and rims will make for a care-free and safe car ride.
