In summer, we move about much more than in any other season, enjoying outings and road trips with rolled-down windows and plenty of sunshine. However, alloy wheels suffer the most during this time owing to pollen flight, insect residue, hot asphalt and more brake dust as a result of frequent driving. With the proper care, you can retain the shine – and it’s easier than you may think.

Step 1: Allow to cool down before cleaning
Crucial on hot summer days: Never clean your rims directly after a drive or under the blazing sun. Detergents dry too fast on heated surfaces, which can cause staining. The best times are early morning or late afternoons.

Step 2: Rinse off coarse dirt
Remove dust, pollen and insect residue using a pressure washer from a distance of 30 to 50 cm.

Step 3: Allow to soak wheel cleaner
Evenly spray on a mild rim cleaner, avoiding acidic or alkaline variants. Allow it to soak for three to five minutes.

Step 4: Give it a good scrub
Using a soft wheel brush or a non-scratch sponge you can remove the most stubborn dirt. An old toothbrush is ideal for cleaning hard-to-reach areas. Wear rubber gloves to protect your hands.

Step 5: Rinsing and drying
Rinse off the wheel cleaner thoroughly and dry the rims with a soft microfibre towel.

Step 6: Apply a sealant
Sealing your rims pays off in summer, preventing pollen, insects and road dust from adhering as strongly and making the next rim cleaning process easier..
