What should you consider when buying wheels?

There are numerous reasons for choosing a set of custom alloy rims: taste, ecology, performance, or comfort requirements. And the range on offer is also diverse—so it's good to know which factors you should pay particular attention to when buying rims.

Rim size

You can find out which rim size is approved by your car manufacturer in the vehicle registration document or manual. The units of measurement for rim size or dimensions are given in inches and refer to the diameter and width of the rim, for example 7.5x18. If you choose rims in dimensions approved by the car manufacturer and they have ECE approval or a general operating permit (ABE), you can easily install the complete wheels using the plug-and-drive method to make it as simple as possible.

Offset and bolt circle

The offset value (ET) is given in millimeters and can be negative or positive. The ET indicates how far the contact surface of the rim is offset from the center of the rim width. This value determines whether the complete wheel disappears deep into the wheel arch or fills it well. The bolt circle refers to the number of holes for the wheel bolts and their distance from each other. This value is defined by the vehicle; sometimes bolt circle adapters are necessary to achieve the desired rim.

Tire pressure monitoring system

Tire pressure monitoring systems (TPMS) are required by law for all vehicles first registered on or after November 1, 2014. A distinction is made between direct and indirect TPMS. Installation of the correct sensors is mandatory—tire dealers can provide you with expert assistance in this regard.

Quality

The wheel, as part of the wheel-tire combination, is a safety-relevant component. Without the approval of the testing organizations, nothing is possible. The easiest way is therefore to use rims that have ABE or ECE approval for your car: in simple terms, these documents confirm that the desired rim fits your unmodified vehicle. If you want something more exotic, you may need individual approval, which requires a part type approval from the manufacturer of the rim you want. It becomes even more challenging if only a material certificate for the rim is available – in this case, you should consult the testers before deciding to buy.
