When work has a taste of vacation

Slowly but surely, I’m approaching the 4,500 km mark, which is quite a distance from home (Lower Austria). But I don’t feel too homesick, what I really feel is wanderlust. Moving around gives you so much joy, even though it’s not always easy. Sometimes it’s actually very strenuous. It’s a continuous sequence of arriving, settling down and moving on. The places that I call temporary homes are pretty diverse.

But one thing is certain – you shouldn’t be too fragile. Sometimes places are, let’s say, a bit rustic. My “partner in crime”, my Skoda Roomster, on the other hand, is not rustic at all: It is adorned – if you have read my first blog entry – with light alloy wheels DEZENT TX graphite. And all four of them are still intact, despite the varying road conditions. From time to time, the side roads and sometimes rather humble country roads here remind me a bit of India

Love-struck
After having passed through Austria, Germany, the Principality of Liechtenstein, Switzerland, France and Spain, I have arrived in Portugal. The Algarve has swept me off my feet, it is absolutely beautiful and wonderfully diverse. Of course, I could have discovered more, especially the island landscapes between Tavira and Faro, but for that I would have had to leave my entire luggage because cars are not possible on these islands. Visiting the probably most beautiful beach of the Algarve, the Praia do Barril, will have to stay on my bucket list.
After San José and Tarifa – both in Andalusia – I am also taken by the small town of Armação de Pêra on the Algarve. I don’t know why, but I love these three places. The moment I arrived I felt comfortable and at home. Even though they are rather simple. That’s the beautiful thing about travelling, especially if you travel by car, if you have only rudimentary itinerary plans and if you are out to explore.
You get lucky all the time and strike gold wherever you go. Sometimes you find a quiet, almost deserted beach, as it happened recently when I just drove across country, turned right, then left; other times you end up in a natural park that just spreads out in front of you and is not really used by anyone, but offers so many marvels.

My top 3 destinations of this adventure :
1. Armação de Pêra at the Algarve, Portugal
2. Tarifa in Andalusia, Spain & San José with Cabo de Gata in Andalusia, Spain
3. Tangier in Morocco, Africa

Work-Life-Beach Balance
In contrast to my digital nomadism in 2017, I am making sure to also take some time off during this year’s adventure. Now that I enjoy Internet autarchy, work has become easier. Thanks to my 30 GB data plan. Apart from that, to be honest, I hardly find any traces of WIFI here. As if people were allergic to it. And that in 2018!
So, another facet has been added to my work-life balance: the beach. This is where I try to spend a lot of time. I go for walks on the beach, just sit and stare at the ocean, or work on my tan. My surfboard is still lashed and stowed in the car – there hasn’t been any real chance to take it out yet. But I hope to change that very soon.

Whenever I talk about this project, people’s first reaction is always the same: I couldn’t do that! I always ask: Why not? Everyone quickly finds reasons for why it is impossible, nobody really believes that they could maybe do it if they just made a few compromises. It’s a pity because travelling opens your mind and your heart. It offers so many positive things, and the distance to daily routine can unleash so much energy.
